Managing the Virtual Workforce Tuesday, October - Babson College

Managing the Virtual Workforce Tuesday, October 25, 2011 BABSON COLLEGE • OLIN HALL • COFFEE: 7:45 A.M. • WORKSHOP: 8:15-11:15 A.M. Outsourcing, globalization, collaboration platforms and programs, social media, and the explosive growth of mobile devices and applications all contribute to the continuing virtualization of work. What are the impacts and implications on the workforce? What are the pitfalls of working virtually and how can organizations anticipate and overcome them? This workshop explores the important concept of Virtual Distance including an exercise in Virtual Distance Mapping. Virtual workforce challenges are among the top priorities for senior leaders and managers across the world. While the advent of flexible, virtual, global and distributed work has brought with it many opportunities, it has also created a host of problems. Among them: successfully managing a virtual workforce in such a way as to maximize productivity and innovation. Many standard solutions focus on meeting strategies, ways to use technology better, and reconfiguring workspaces. However, these are not going to get organizations to the next level. What's needed is a deeper understanding of the disconnects at a human level and action plans that get to the heart of relationship building across time and space. The Virtual Distance Model provides a research-based, concrete way to do so. During this workshop Karen Sobel Lojeski, Professor at Stony Brook University and Founder of the Virtual Distance Institute, will review the Virtual Distance Model and apply it to a case study. Participants will learn how to do Virtual Distance Mapping, a key tool for today’s networked world. Virtual Distance Mapping will help participants learn new ways to understand and analyze their organization and, in this way, solutions can be implemented to boost performance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Karen Sobel Lojeski is a Professor in the Department of Technology and Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, and a Professor in the College of Business at Stony Brook University. Lojeski is internationally recognized as the world’s leading expert on virtual teams, distributed work, and executing competitive strategies to leverage the new world of work. She is the author of two books, Uniting the Virtual Workforce: Transforming Leadership and Innovation in the Globally Integrated Enterprise and Leading the Virtual Workforce: How Great Leaders Transform Organizations in the 21st Century, showcasing executives from Western Union, IBM, Merck, HP, AT&T, Alcatel‐Lucent, and Crayola. Lojeski is the pioneer who discovered Virtual Distance, a measurable, digital age phenomenon that strongly impacts critical success factors. She is an award‐winning researcher and sought after public speaker on leadership, innovation and virtual work. Lojeski holds a Ph.D. from Stevens Institute of Technology.
